A Return to Self-Leadership

I hope this finds you as well as possible, given all that is moving in our world.

I’ve been reflecting a lot these past few days. I’m noticing I need more time and space for discernment — time to self-regulate and align in my heart center before taking action. What feels very present, and what is showing up consistently in my 1:1 sessions this past week, is this shared question:

How do we remain Self-led in all that we do, especially during times of uncertainty, intensity, and rapid change? And how do those of us in any privileged capacity serve?

I live in Maine, and with recent ICE activity in Southern Maine and across the country, I’m witnessing how profoundly activated many nervous systems, hearts, and souls are right now. There is fear, outrage, grief, anger, confusion, and deep concern. There is also a longing for clarity, justice, safety, and meaningful ways to serve.

Across many conversations, I’m hearing a similar theme:

How do I serve? What is the right action here? I care deeply, and I’m not sure where my leadership is meant to be expressed.

Many people are experiencing what we call cognitive dissonance — holding conflicting thoughts, feelings, and impulses at the same time. Wanting to help, while not knowing how. Feeling called to act, while also sensing a need to slow down. This isn’t a flaw. It’s a deeply human response to complex and stressful moments.

This makes sense.

This kind of discernment needs space and stillness. It requires a regulated, calm nervous system to access a centered heart and clear mind. This is being Self-led.

True Self-led leadership requires discernment. And discernment requires space, stillness, and regulation. It arises not from pressure, but from inner listening — from a settled nervous system and an open, coherent heart.

Each of us will feel called in different ways.

Some will be led toward inspired action.
Some toward quiet support behind the scenes.
Some toward tending family, community, or inner healing.
Some toward creating, meditating, organizing, donating, speaking, or holding presence.

There is no single correct expression of service.

All parts are welcome.
All pathways are valid.
Comparison and self-judgment only pull us away from Self.

I’ve had the privilege of studying with and learning from extraordinary leaders in psychotherapy and nervous system science — including Stephen Porges, Deb Dana, and Richard Schwartz. Along with their brilliance, do you know what they all have in common?

They are kind.

That is what we need. Kindness.

Although not one of the eight C’s of Self in IFS (compassion, curiosity, courage, clarity, calm, connectedness, confidence, and creativity), I feel that kindness is a key attribute of being Self-led.

When the world feels destabilizing, many people are moving in and out of a narrow window of tolerance — cycling through fear, grief, anger, shutdown, hypervigilance, and overwhelm. This is a very human response to collective stress and uncertainty.

A few gentle reminders and practices I’ve been sharing:

  • Be mindful of your media intake
  • Pace yourself
  • Limit doom-scrolling
  • Find a balance between staying informed and staying regulated
  • Look for glimmers — small signs of safety, goodness, and connection
  • Place a hand on your heart
  • Slow your breath
  • Return to the body

The more regulated we are, the more access we have to discernment, compassion, and wise response. When we are deeply dysregulated, our parts tend to take the wheel — and we lose access to our intuition and deeper knowing.

Change begins on the inside first.
It begins within.

A few simple truths I return to again and again:

Choose love over fear.
Energy first, physical second.

When we remember We are One and return to stillness — Be still and know I AM — we come back into alignment with our deepest truth.

Who you are being shapes the field more than any single action. When we tend to our inner state, we naturally become instruments of clarity, coherence, and love.

When we stabilize our inner world, we stabilize the collective energetic field around us. When we lead from Self, we become quiet yet powerful anchors in turbulent times.

You are not alone.
You matter.
Your presence matters.

If you’re feeling tender, uncertain, or simply human right now, you’re in very good company.
